Secrets Of The World Class
(Part 3 of 4) The first two articles discussed how World Class people have a Mission and Purpose for their lives and an Unstoppable Attitude that keeps them on course! The third distinction is that pros know how to remain Calm Under Pressure! World Class people decide how they are going to think, feel and behave. Those driven by fear and excuses do not. They move through life continually "reacting" to external situations instead of paying attention to what's happening on the inside. World Class professionals constantly monitor their self-talk (the conversation you mentally have with yourself) and their body language because they realize this combination determines how they feel and behave. Life IS tension and the better you manage that tension the more successful you will be! Effective people also realize that others are looking to them for support and inspiration. The more "together" you appear, especially in difficult times, the more reassured and pro-active others will become around you! I know for a fact that when I'm having "a good day" all my clients do well. When I'm having a "bad day" suddenly all of my clients are in crisis. Solution: I only have "good days." This is a conscious decision and if my attitude slips because of pressures I mentally create in my mind, I close the door to my office, sneak away to the bathroom, or go outside and get myself back together. How To Turn A "Bad Day" Into A "Good Day." Be aware of how you hold your body. Are you tense or shrugged over? Are you breathing shallow or holding your breath? Are your shoulders or jaw muscles tight? Are you pacing or fidgety? Solution: Make your body more loose and relaxed. If you feel tight as though life is "squeezing" you, expand your body by extending your arms out and take full, deep breaths. Breathe in slowly through your nose and exhale even slower through your nose. This will trigger your Relaxation Response and help you quickly feel calm! Shift back towards what's most important and refocus on the Mission! Only after relaxing your body and changing your internal communication should you attempt to re-direct your thoughts. Otherwise, it will feel like a struggle to think more positive and you'll get caught up in a self-defeating internal debate. These three steps will get you back into an empowered resource state so that you can resume having a "good day." Bottom line: The more you are calm and cool under pressure, the more reassured and confident those around you will become. As they say, "It starts from the top."
